4C | Definitions | Grading Scale |
Cut | The most important factor in determining the stone’s beauty; it refers to the diamonds shape and proportions to maximize beauty. | Cut is measured in a range from good to very good to excellent to ideal.
Common Diamond Shapes:
|
Clarity | Refers to the measurement of inclusions, otherwise known as flaws seen in diamonds. Inclusions are natural to the stone and are observed in various ways from number to nature to size to shape and to location. | Clarity is measured by a loupe, a small 10-power (10x) magnifying glass. Below is the commonly accepted and utilized grading scale:
|
Color | Ideally, a diamond should be colorless. Diamonds are color-graded based on a universal scale. | The universal scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (saturated/yellow). |
Carat | Diamonds are weighed in units known as carats, in which one carat is equivalent to 0.20 grams. Please note that the carat, or size of the stone alone, does not determine the price. Diamonds are priced based on many factors, including cut, clarity, color along with symmetry, polish, table and depth percentage, fluorescence, girdle, culet measurements along with additional quality measurements. | The carat is evaluated on a 100 point system. As such,
One carat equals 0.20 grams. |
